INTERVIEW ON BLAKMARKET.NET
BLAKMARKET.NET: DJ Flaco thanks for taking the time out to do this. Now, please tell everyone who you are where you’re from?
im from ohio the cleveland area
BLAKMARKET.NET: When did you become a DJ and who are your biggest influences?
i started djin winter of 92′ , doin free parties around the way. i gotta say any hard working dj that mixes and has actually touched vinyl.
BLAKMARKET.NET: Can you tell us about the first mixtape you ever released?
ha, that tape was weak, it was in 93′. it was on an old tdk tape that had been recorded over probly 100 times. no artwork jus marker tag. my first mix cd was in 02′ it was dope it was actually my come back from being away so long i sold a couple hundred copies
BLAKMARKET.NET: If you could do one mixtape with one artist, who would that be and why?
probally az , he is the truth, he got mean word play and top notch swag. we feelin you in ohio az , so u gotta come out this way homie
BLAKMARKET.NET: What’s your favorite mixtape to date that you’ve put out? What would you say is your least memorable?
my fav joint would have to be this reggaeton one i did for valentines day “los amores vol.1″. i still get emails and text msgs askin for thoses. dnt worry people vol.3 is coming 09′ i got yall . as far as my least memorable one, it would have to be my first rnb tape. the opening was week, i cant stand to look at the cover
BLAKMARKET.NET: Where do you see the future of the mixtape industry headed, since the internet plays such a big role nowadays?
man mixtapes are just gonna be dinasours (well the hard copies). i mean everyone is goin the digital download path and heads aint really burnin them on cd after they download em, they jus throwin em in the mp3 players. i aint trippin im wit it all day, less chips on printin covers and duppin cds. now the net can also hurt you if you aint on top of your game.
BLAKMARKET.NET: What’s the difference between your CDs now and your previous releases?
well the quality of the music is alot better, ive gotten better at mastering my mix. i still mix nonstop as i did before its just now it doesnt take me as long to drop a new mix
BLAKMARKET.NET: What makes your CDs stand out? What can I expect to hear from one of your tapes?
you will always get a mixtape from me, not jus a tape wit music on it. i mix homie jus like i do in the club
BLAKMARKET.NET: Speaking of mixtapes, what’s your opinion on the RIAA?
real talk im not feelin the riaa, them empty suit suits are a bunch of losers. fwd that to them! the labels aint to far either. how can you strike the unit (mixtape djs) who you give product to feed the listeners. if you dont want yo music from your artist heard in the clubs and on the streets then stop sendin me/us your product then. but when no one buys your product (because they aint hear it on the block or in the club) then dont come sending me/us a gang of email saying and i quote “please stand behind this record, we need your help to break it in your market”. dumb asses, wut the hell you thought we was doin?
BLAKMARKET.NET: Can you tell us the type of equipment and/or programs you use?
i use serato and cdj1000s, but i will use 1200s if the club doesnt have cdjs.
BLAKMARKET.NET: Overall, on a scale of 1-10, where would you rate yourself thus far in your career?
i give myself an eight, im not where i wanna be so i cant play myself and rate myself at the ten spot yet. but im comin people and i aint leavin when i get there
BLAKMARKET.NET: Is there anything other than Hip-Hop that you would want to venture into?
yea i wanna own a radio station that broadcast on air and online. i want the people to have the option of what they want to listen to at that moment. weather it be hip hop, reggaeton or even rock.
BLAKMARKET.NET: Are there any artist(s) you’re currently working with? If so, who’s in the studio with you right now?
right now im working with 2 reggaeton groups (las voces de la calle and aziel y bori q) they hot so look for them in 2009
BLAKMARKET.NET: What are some of the awards you’ve received?
i got a few in the military lol, na but i got a justo this year (finally), i been nominated a few times at the justo and a few times at the ohio hiphop awards
BLAKMARKET.NET: Do you have any words for up and coming DJ(s) trying to get in the industry?
yea, jus grind forget the politics do what you feel, thats wut i do. i mean you are the dj, the crowd follows you
BLAKMARKET.NET: Flaco it’s been a pleasure, thanks for taking time out with Blakmarket.net, do you have any last words and/or shout outs?

Aw: Aiight you hail from the Midwest, Ohio to be exact. How would you
describe the sound in Ohio?
Flaco: Our shit out here is a mixture of south and east combined wit a cold

the beats. But if you pay close attention the flow sounds neither south

Aw: A lot of southern artists have come to the Ohio market and made an
impact. Do you think a lot of artists still sleep on Ohio and its
market?

Shout and welcome to DJ Flaco. I’ve had this project for a minute but party joints don’t really get out dated like some other mixtapes. For those that don’t know, Flaco is Ohio’s Mixtape Murderer…gotta love that tag line too. I’m not gonna give you mad highlights. I mean you know these songs already so it really comes down to the mix.
There’s a couple things that make a great party/club mixtape. First up is you have to cater to who is gonna be listening to this the most…the females. This isn’t the time to play that new M.O.P track that you just got emailed. Chics want hits, they want energy and they need to be consistent throughout. Next is timing. You don’t even need to be mixing and beat matching everything like a wild banche…as long as the next track drops on time that’s all that matters. Flaco does this well and he even has two hosts throughout: Kat De Luna and Flo-rida. . Tracks have to drop somewhat quickly too. If your “In The Club” mixtape tracks out at 15 tracks you don’t get it. Flaco tops this project off at 40. We all know “quality” mixtapes have peaks and valley’s but your “club” mixtape should be pretty level, not dipping into too many valley’s. Flaco’s first “valley” hits with Wiz Khalifa’s “Say Yeah”. It’s a dope song, but I say “valley” in the sense that’s when shit slows down a little. It’s mostly to segue into “Lollipop” and the lower tempo joints. He brings that tempo back up after a few joints with the Movado laced “I’m On The Roc” remix.
The thing that stands out the most to me with this project is the energy. Flaco kept shit consistent throughout, his ear is most def on point too. Acutal turntable skills will only get you so far on a party mixtape. You can cut shit up till the cows come home but if your track selection is wack you lose before you even get done cutting. Track section and true mixing hold down this joint…and that’s the bottom line. (7/8/08)

Let’s give a warm welcome to DJ Flaco everyone. Hustle Squad DJs in the building, see I even spelled it right unlike those magazine pre-views ya’ll cats clamor over. I’ve seen Flaco’s CDs on the net here an there but never had the pleasure of listening till now. Damn if that isn’t a classic title for a mixtape. You know all you really want in a summer time mixtape is some well mixed feel good tracks old or new it doesn’t matter. At the same time there is never a better opportunity to stick someone up than the summer time. Think about it, posted up at the beach next to a ATM…hmmm I’ll be right back.
Click on the cover and peep the track list. Damn near every radio joint thats popped off in the last couple months and then some. I’m not gonna bore you with mad highlights of tracks you can hear on the radio at any given time but I will tell you that Flaco did throw in some of his own remixes and he’s a got a good ear for what works. The “Call On Me” joint works well, a little Lil Jon never hurt no one. The “Girl” blend…not so much, the “Goin’ Down” beat got to me after a while. My daughter for some reason is diggin’ “U And That..”, especially E-40′s part. Should E-40 fans be worried that a six year old girl can rhyme his shit word for word?
On to Part 4.5…aka the second CD. Who’s feeling JT on “Sexyback”? Personally I think Robin Thicke would eat JT alive, well maybe not in a dance contest. lol I don’t give a fuck, “Wanna Love You Girl” is my shit. I bump the Mick Boogie version with the Pusha T verse but regardless this song is crazy as cat shit. Now on the flipside of things is “Freeze” with LL Cool J. I’d rather hear fat chics taking a shit than this track. Rick Ross and Trina with “Fuck Wit Ur Shoes On” was interesting. The shit that got me rollin’ was Diddy rhyming with Danity Kane. I can’t believe I actualy wrote out their name, wow.
The first CD is def better than the second. Too many hits on the first jump off. I gotta tell you I was on the fence between 2.5 and 3 tapes. I mean DJ Flaco put in work, every track is mixed into the next and it’s done well, can’t front on that. I’m getting to the point where I EXPECT certain DJs to mix they shit or show some skill and if they don’t I’m calling you out. I can def add Flaco to that list from now on. The good thing about these CDs is you don’t need to cop another R&B CD for a couple months, props to Flaco for wraping up the end summer proper like. (8/17/06)
